About Hewitson:

Dr. Albert Gordon Hewitson was born on February 28, 1924, in Cornwall, Ontario, to Hartley Gordon Hewitson and Ethel (Martin) Hewitson. He grew up with one brother, George Lionel “Huey” Hewitson.

Albert began his military service on September 15, 1941, enlisting as a Corporal with the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders. A year later, on October 13, 1942, he earned a commission in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve (RCNR) as a Probationary Midshipman, stationed at HMCS Cataraqui in Kingston, Ontario.

Throughout World War II, he served with distinction aboard HMCS Venture, HMCS Kings, and HMCS Kengami, as well as at Point Edward Naval Base and the “stone frigate” HMCS Cataraqui. During his service, he earned his Watchkeeping Certificate and qualified for navigation duties. By the time he was discharged from active service on September 15, 1945, he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant.

Following the war, Hewitson took a brief hiatus from the military to pursue his education. He rejoined the RCNR on December 1, 1947. From 1947 to 1948, he served aboard HMCS Nootka (R96) and at several land-based naval establishments, including HMCS Cataraqui, HMCS Bytown, and HMCS Stadacona.

On May 28, 1949, Albert married Edith Beach. Together, they had two daughters: Sharon Elizabeth and Jane D. Hewitson.

In May 1951, he graduated from Queen’s University School of Medicine in Kingston, Ontario. Just eight months later, he was promoted to the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant. From 1951 to 1957, he continued his naval service aboard HMCS La Hulloise, HMCS Buckingham, and at shore stations HMCS Shearwater and HMCS Donnacona. On April 26, 1957, he was transferred to the retired list, holding the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant Commander.

For his dedicated service, Dr. Hewitson was awarded the Canadian Forces’ Decoration Medal on February 14, 1957. His full medal entitlement includes the 1939–1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp, the War Medal 1939–1945, and the Canadian Forces Decoration.

After completing his pediatric specialty residency on January 1, 1958, Dr. Hewitson went on to practice pediatric medicine in Pointe-Claire, Montreal, where he served the community until his retirement in 1986.

Dr. Albert Gordon Hewitson passed away peacefully in Brockville, Ontario, on April 21, 2017, at the age of 93. He is laid to rest alongside his beloved wife Edith in Woodlawn Cemetery, Cornwall, Ontario.
